Afghan Weddings
Weddings in every country are different. The events that partake in a wedding in the United States are completly different from the way a wedding takes place in Afghanistan. This difference is because of their different values and traditions. Each tradition has their own rules to follow. We will be specifically focusing on Afghanistan wedding traditions. But before we begin, we need to identify what their tradition is and what they do.
In a typicial Afghan wedding, they have their own rituals and rules to follow:
- First, the male sends a marriage proposal to the women's house. If the women accepts, the bride's parents throw an engagement party and invite family relatives.
- At the engagement party, the bride and groom dress up and they celebrate with Attan dancing.
- A few months later, the wedding comes. Typically, they bride and groom have the religious ceremony during the day, and then the party at night.
- After the wedding, the wife moves in with the husband. The wife will not leave the car unless she is presented with a beautiful gift.
- Finally, the couple recieve wedding gifts from the brides family, and the couple go on their honeymoon.

Weddings are usually a happy time, not just for the bride and groom, but also for thier families and relatives too. Until the parents of the groom see the amount of money they have to pay, they are happy to their hearts content. It's not a complete surprise to anybody that weddings can be really expensive. The amount of money the Afghans spend to cover for the wedding and the gifts has to punch a big hole in their bank account. That is definitly not good, especially during a time of war.
War can be very expensive, not just for the people and the governments that are fighting, but also for the commonwealth too. War can cause the destruction of businesses, which can cost a man a job. How would he be able to provide the money to put food on the table for his family? If his daughter was about to marry, how would he be able to buy those expensive wedding presents? There is no way he could do both. War doesn't just make people poor, it can also lead to danger. An Afghan family wouldn't be able to hold a wedding party, for they risk their house being stormed by enemy soldiers or being shot for being suspected for being soldiers. With that being said, how would a family be able to partake in these wedding traditions? The answer is quite simple, they can't. The war halts these wedding traditions from happening, but there are other traditions that war prevents.
